In the process of creating layered collages, I discovered the power of an electric sander. I started sanding to erase things I didn’t like, but quickly discovered that the real beauty of sanding isn’t what it subtracts, but what it adds. Text emerges. Bits of images fade in and out. Pictures blend together. Color appears in unexpected places. What’s revealed is a surprise and a mystery that draws you closer to see what you can find hidden in the details. Each piece is made from paper, posters, vintage book and magazine pages, used envelopes, maps, and other ephemera, layered and sanded and layered some more.
