Series One

As a mostly self-taught artist, I used to scratch my head when "real" artists would say things like, "Listen to the work. Ask yourself what it wants." What the work wants? What's that supposed to mean?! And then, one day in a workshop, I finally got it. It's about letting go of expectations (better yet: not starting with them in the first place) and just acting and reacting to what is shaping up on the page. "Layered" is a series of works that celebrate listening to the work. Images are layered over and over each other until something interesting starts to emerge, then the refinement starts. Each starts with a blank piece of wood that I cover with paper, paint, ink, and image transfers until the piece tells me to stop.
